What is Somatic Therapy and How Can It Help You?

Have you ever felt like you speak about your problems endlessly, know them intellectually, but still carry the burden of them in your chest or stomach? You're not alone. Traditional talk therapy can be very powerful, but sometimes words don't do it for where stress and trauma reside. Here at The Grove Counselling & Therapy, we provide somatic therapy – a whole-person approach that accepts that your body tells a story just as important as your mind.

Bridging the Gap: Understanding the Mind-Body Connection in Trauma and Stress

We tend to think of our mind and body as two quite separate entities. We treat anxiety with thoughts, and take medicine for our physical pain. But somatic therapy is grounded in the concept that the mind and body are linked intrinsically. When we experience chronic stress or trauma, or our bodies respond physically.

Our heart races, muscles tense, and our breathing shallows. And if we don't fully process these events, that physical tension can become 'stuck'. Somatic therapy bridges this gap, allowing you to tap into your body's wisdom to heal emotional scars that cognitive reasoning can never quite reach.

The Role of the Nervous System in Storing Emotional Memory

Why does the body retain so much of the past? It really comes down to the nervous system. When we are threatened, our body gets ready to fight, flee, or freeze. When that threat is gone, animals in the wild literally 'shake off' that energy and head back into calm. For humans, however, that release is often muted.

As a result, the nervous system either remains at a high alert or goes into shutdown. Years later, this 'stored' energy can give way to chronic pain, digestive woes, an unexpected panic attack, or feeling numb. Somatic therapy assists the nervous system in completing that interrupted cycle of processing, allowing your body to finally feel safe.

The Practice: Focusing on Body Sensations, Movement, and Grounding Techniques

So, what does somatic therapy actually entail? It is different from standard counselling, where you are mostly talking about what occurred. Instead, somatic work deals with the sensation – how it feels now. For example, you might focus on where in your body you are feeling tension or pain when discussing a particular challenging subject.

We practice grounding techniques, such as placing your feet on the floor or paying attention to how your chair feels beneath you, to keep you rooted in the present. And sometimes, we recommend small, focused movements to help drain away pent-up energy. It's a subtle, gradual process of becoming friends with your interior physical landscape.

How Somatic Therapy Helps Resolve Trauma Without Reliving It

One of the greatest fears clients have is that they will have to relive their worst memories. A key advantage of somatic therapy is that you don't have to re-tell the traumatic story in detail. Instead, by concentrating on how trauma looks and feels in your body today, such as a flutter in the stomach or tightness in the throat, we can process it without retraumatising you, or making you go through it all again through trauma counselling. We treat the body's memory as a medium for healing, without the need for extensive talking.

What to Expect in a Somatic Counselling Session

A session of somatic therapy at The Grove Counselling & Therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental environment. Somatic sessions are like conversations, with frequent breaks to check in with your body. Your therapist may ask what you notice happening in your body, or different parts of your body, as you go through the session. You will learn to understand and control your own nervous system, building resilience that you can use in your daily life. It's a profound way to go from just surviving to truly thriving.
